PLTW is being implemented in transitional kindergarten (TK) classes through fifth grade in the computer and science STEM labs. Each PLTW Launch module engages students in cross-disciplinary activities that spark a lifelong love of learning and builds knowledge and skills in areas including computer science, engineering and biomedical science. In addition, each module empowers students to develop essential skills such as problem-solving, critical and creative thinking, communication, collaboration and perseverance. PLTW modules are easily adapted to point to God’s truth through creation, unity in the body of Christ, and God’s design of the human brain.
Students will recognize that computers reflect God’s precise and orderly design. They will understand man’s knowledge to create the computer comes from God and is His gift to us. All elementary students from transitional kindergarten (TK) classes through fifth grade participate in weekly classes in the computer/STEM lab. Our younger students are introduced to typing with correct finger placement and basic coding using Bee Bots. First and second grades are introduced to coding and use their imaginations to create animated stories and games using Scratch. Third through fifth grades are introduced to 3D printing using various CAD (Computer-aided Design) applications like Tinkercad and Cookiecad. Fourth and fifth grades begin to create, code and work with robotics using VEX IQ Robot Design kits. Before leaving elementary, all students will work towards mastery of basic Microsoft Office software and the Schoology LMS (Learning Management System).
“The more I study nature, the more amazed I am at the work of the Creator. Science brings men nearer to God.” ~Louis Pasteur
In the elementary science and STEM Lab, we strive to incorporate science, technology, engineering and math at age-appropriate levels through exploration and investigation of physical, life, earth and space sciences. All students in grades TK-5 learn to develop and design investigations which will yield wonder and answers to God’s creation of the roles of plants and animals in our physical world, as well as, explore and investigate physical characteristics of objects as they test and model forces. Students will not only examine and test scientific processes in the lab; they will also examine the world around them outdoors with God’s creation.
