Elementary Specials & Field Trips
Art

In grades TK – 2, students primarily focus on fine motor skills in addition to elements and principles of art. They are exposed to and given opportunities to use many types of mediums. Each year, curriculum is designed to build on what was learned in the preceding year, while adding new elements. The art pieces become more complex, and the details become more emphasized. In grades 3-5, students begin working with more complex mediums such as polymer clay and acrylic paint on canvas.
Art Competition
Elementary students participate in in the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo Art Competition with many pieces of artwork winning top level ribbons and medals.
Music
Each TK-5 class attends music class once per week for fifty minutes. A strong emphasis is placed on worship – what worship is and ways in which to worship through music. Students also take part in general music education including rhythm, pitch, harmony and form, to name a few. Students participate by singing, moving, playing games, creating music and playing instruments such as Boom Whackers, rhythm sticks, drums, recorders and ukuleles.
Musical Opportunities and Performance
- All elementary students worship during chapel each Wednesday morning.
- Fourth and fifth graders perform patriotic selections during the Veterans Day program in November.
- All elementary students perform at the annual school-wide Christmas program in early December.
- All elementary students perform at Grandparents & Special Friends Day in February.
- In fourth and fifth grades, students learn the basics of sight-singing using the Kodaly method, students learn to play the recorder and each student is provided his/her own during the unit of study.
- Fifth graders learn to play the ukulele. Numerous chords are taught, and simple songs are played.
- In the spring, students have the opportunity to participate in performance days where they can prepare a solo or ensemble to perform within the classroom setting.
- Kindergarten also performs a few special songs during kindergarten graduation in May.
Students visit the library weekly to engage in age-appropriate library programming. Students participate in book selection, reading incentive programs, read-alouds, storytelling and creative activities. Throughout the year, the library participates in special events including book fair, summer reading challenge, Kindergarten Bedtime Stories, Literacy Night and the book exchange. Students also enjoy a welcoming atmosphere designed to incentivize the love of reading which includes visits to a book vending machine. The goal of the library is for students to engage in programming that will create lifelong readers.

P.E.
Elementary P.E. provides students in transitional kindergarten (TK) through first grade the opportunity to develop fine motor skills and locomotive skills through various activities. Students also participate in team building activities and are learning basic athletic skills like throwing and catching a ball.
Students in second through fifth grade are learning the beginning rules and procedures of various sports like volleyball, basketball and even frisbee. Throughout each unit, the P.E. teacher builds on skills needed in each sport to end the unit giving students a chance to play the sport in a game-like setting.
P.E. Lab
Students in transitional kindergarten (TK) through first grade get the opportunity to go to P.E. Lab. It is designed to help children develop the skills necessary for learning readiness and mastery of their environment. It helps to improve the child’s ability to maneuver and function in their environment, leading them to better performances in tasks such as handwriting, sitting still, paying attention, speaking and behavior.
Science STEM Lab

In the elementary science and STEM Lab, we strive to incorporate science, technology, engineering and math at age-appropriate levels through exploration and investigation of physical, life, earth and space sciences. All K-5 students learn to develop and design investigations which will yield wonder and answers to God’s creation of the roles of plants and animals in our physical world; as well as, explore and investigate physical characteristics of objects as they test and model forces. Students will not only examine and test scientific processes in the lab, but they will also examine the world around them outdoors with God’s creation.
Field Trips
Each year in elementary school, students participate in two exciting field trips chosen to complement our curriculum. These are included in tuition and are greatly anticipated by our students. Each trip is designed to meet the standards of a specific topic or curriculum focus.
Fifth grade takes an overnight retreat each year to dive into God’s Word and enjoy team building activities that lead to strong friendships and the development of leadership skills
